Asymmetric Magazine: Tell us about your series.
Tyler Spangler: I don't really like to section my work into series. I like to look at my entire body of work as a progression and experimentation of form and color. There are themes throughout my work that I like to revisit, but I also like to expand on previous pieces.

AM: What themes do you typically revisit?
TS: Voyeurism, food, chaos, and connection.

AM: What is your biggest inspiration?
TS: My biggest inspiration is to be able to continue to create work that will inspire other people to either create art or do what they want in their own field. My work is really therapeutic for me. A combination of surfing, music, and creating would have to be the biggest inspiration behind all of my work.

AM: What role does Los Angeles play in your work?
TS: I think it plays a huge role. I think the laid back yet fast paced culture fuels the energy in my work. The vibrant sunsets and number of sunny days brings brightness to even my more darker subjects. The ocean plays a huge role, as well. I just love the energy and chaos that the ocean has.

AM: We love your mix of photo, illustration, and other graphic design elements. Can you tell us a bit about your process for conceptualizing and creating a new piece?
TS: I like to start by browsing images until I see one that evokes a feeling to me. After that, I start manipulating the piece without really thinking of an end goal, though sometimes an image just lends itself to a certain solution.

AM: What can we expect to see from you next?
TS: I have no idea. I will continue to experiment and see where it takes me!
