Music Spotlight: Half The Animal

Music Spotlight: Half The Animal

LA-based pop-rock band Half The Animal made a huge impression on us last month with the release of their track Magic. The band, composed of Chase Johnson, Nick Gross, + Dan Graham, graces our ears with a dancey, yet chill sound that we can’t get out of our heads. we chatted with Chase about the track, the band’s inspiration + what’s in the works. we’re stoked to hear what’s next from these guys! PS. if you’re in LA, don’t miss their show at The Roxy with lovelytheband Thursday, September 27.

Asymmetric Magazine: Congrats on your recent release! Tell us about Magic.
Chase Johnson: Muchas Gracias! Magic is by far our favorite song we’ve released thus far. It’s more about the feeling it gives you than anything else. The endless search for magic aka happiness.

AM: How does it compare to your previous tracks like Babylon and Bad Bad Love?
CJ: Every song we write is always different, and we try never to compare any of them to previous work. Our ADHD wouldn’t allow us to make anything comparable by any means.

AM: How would you describe your sound?
CJ: Our sound is a combination of my wondering mind, Nick’s beat-driven mind, and Dan’s guitar-loving mind. All in all, we always want to evolve and change to fit our moods.

AM: What themes do you typically pursue through your music?
CJ: Love, good times, past, present, and future.

AM: What other musicians are currently inspiring you?
CJ: So many at the moment, but to name a few: Sir Sly, Broken Bells, Mansionair, Coast Modern, 90’s hip hop, and the list goes on and on and on and on and yes, on.

AM: Where is one place that you feel completely in touch with your creative self/music?
CJ: Laguna Beach, where I was born and raised. It’s everything.

AM: What can we expect to hear from you next?
CJ: Well, we’ve been working on a new body of music with our friends Captain Cuts and Sam Martin, which has been like a dream. Collaboration is important to us in growing as writers and as artists. Basically… new music!
